Debating Abortion and Contraception in Socialist Yugoslavia

This article discusses the debates on abortion rights and practices that took place in socialist Yugoslavia. It focuses microhistorical case studies of Varaždin Karlovac, with specific attention given to period between first liberalisation for social reasons 1960 full until 10 weeks 1969. The primary sources this stem from collections Conference Social Activity Women Croatian State Archives, as well periodicals such Arhiv za zaštitu majke i djeteta issued by Institute Protection Mother Child Zagreb. Digitalised local press – Varaždinski vjesnik Karlovački tjednik are also explored. As shown paper, 1960s Yugoslavia generated a wide array dilemmas women practitioners alike. While legal abortions were seen necessary curb illegal ones, they nonetheless perceived something should best be prevented which could prejudice woman’s reproductive abilities, particularly pregnancies. Many recurred result lack health infrastructure, unavailable contraceptives, difficult conditions persisting patriarchal gender norms.
